Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — The State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) and the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic (FGR) are accelerating their investigation against a former mayor.
On Monday morning during his regular press conference, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador confirmed that there is an investigation against Laura Fernández, former mayor of the municipality of Puerto Morelos.
“It is being investigated. Last time I did not want to comment because those who are allegedly responsible were governor candidates, so we did not want to talk about this, but there is an open investigation with the Prosecutor’s Office.
“We are going to ask that attention be paid to it and that it be accelerated because there have been serious problems in Puerto Morelos,” reported AMLO on Monday morning.
During the morning question and answer session, López Obrador explained that the investigations are continuing their course and that in-depth inquiries will be made to present a report.
In May, Laura Fernández, the former two time mayor of Puerto Morelos, was denounced for the diversion of more than 1.2 billion in resources during her two administrations, which included a 20-year debt that left the municipality in two public-private partnership contracts with a company owned by Fernández’s husband, Carlos Moyano.
Both contracts add up to 832 million pesos to be paid over 20 years, which commits 48 percent of the federal shares of Puerto Morelos for two decades and six municipal administrations.
Laura Fernández was reported by the current Puerto Morelos mayor, Blanca Merari. Merari reported the alleged embezzlement of the municipality’s finances from the administration of her predecessor and former Quintana Roo governor candidate. Laura Fernández is currently a federal deputy.
