Young diver reported missing after fishing near Xcalacoco

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Navel Search and Rescue continue to search for a young diver who has been missing since Sunday. Playa del Carmen Port Captain Genaro Narváez says they received the missing persons report Sunday around 7:30 p.m. after 19-year-old Wilberth Fernando L.K. failed to return to his boat. His fishing colleagues said he was part of their fishing team diving at Xcalacoco but has not been heard from since.

On Monday morning, a search was launched however, there has been no sign of the young man.

“On Sunday at 7:30 p.m. we received a call from the skipper of the Ixchel boat reporting the disappearance of a person,” said Captain Genaro Narváez Hernández. “The Naval Search and Rescue Station was informed, but as it was already late, the search started on Monday.”

“We have traveled by sea, about three miles and also on the beaches near the Xcalacoco area. Three boats have been given the task of finding him,” Narváez said.

At the time of his disappearance, he was commercial fish diving for lobster. His colleagues say they found only his personal buoy, harpoon and single fin.

There have been no signs of the 19-year-old since rescue efforts began more than 72 hours ago. Police report Wilberth is from the neighboring state of Yucatan.

At least three nautical miles have been searched. Fishermen from Ixchel have also participated in looking for Wilberth.
