Cancun, Q.R. — A semi trailer loaded with 12 tons of meat was stolen Thursday afternoon at an exit on the outskirts of Cancun. Police report that the driver of the heavy unit was traveling along the highway, leaving Cancun via an exit with Mérida, when he was intercepted by thieves.
The 4:00 p.m. heist saw the driver removed from the truck and left on the side of the highway, while the thieves made off with his unit. They did not get very far, however. Elements of the National Guard were called in who located the fully loaded semi in a ditch along the same roadway.
Police figure the thieves were unable to drive the truck, leaving it abandoned. It was found in tact at kilometre 289 near a bridge. Those responsible for the theft fled before police arrived.
