Random Felipe Carrillo Puerto shooter captured

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — A man wanted for the random shooting of a passerby in the town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto has been taken into custody. The man, who is known to police for similar past actions, was arrested over the weekend after a lengthy search.

The State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) of Quintana Roo reported that local authorities were finally able to locate the alleged shooter identified as Fernando “N”. The man, who has a known history of mental illness, was arrested Sunday morning from 56th Street in the Leona Vicario neighborhood of the town.

He was spotted shortly after 10:00 a.m. walking the streets of Felipe Carrillo Puerto by patrolling officers. After a 30-minute chase through town streets, Fernando “N” was captured and taken into custody at 10:40 a.m.

He is known by the alias “Tirador” (shooter) and was arrested “for his probable participation in the commission of acts possibly constituting crimes against the life and integrity of people,” the FGE reported.

Fernando “N” was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant after allegedly taking aim at a male town resident riding a bicycle on December 31, 2023. The man was hit by the gunfire and taken to hospital.

Fernando “N” was arrested in June of 2023 after a week long jungle search for his whereabouts after nearly a dozen people were hit by gunfire. A majority of those injured in the unprovoked attacks were Maya Train construction workers.

The man was identified by his family as likely being responsible since he had a history of similar actions. Their help lead police to his location and subsequent arrest in June of 2023. He was admitted to a mental health facility but later released.

According to the FGE, Fernando “N” has been arrested again “based on events that occurred on December 31, 2023, when the male victim was traveling on a road in this municipality on a bicycle. When he stopped to take photos with his cell phone, he was injured by gunshots.”
