Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — A total of eight Maya Train construction workers have been shot in the past few weeks while working. On Thursday, two more Maya Train workers were taken to hospital with wounds after being shot while on the job.
It is the eighth such shooting this month. All eight men have been fired upon in the same Maya Train work station in Felipe Carrillo Puerto. The shootings against the construction workers began June 5.
On Thursday, the latest two victims were taken to local hospital after being shot with a pellet gun, however, the six before them were hit by bullets. The attacks are occurring near the Sijil Noh Ha Lagoon access road south of the town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.
Elements of the Army and National Guard deployed in the area again Thursday in search of the person(s) responsible. The attacks are occuring against workers on section 6 of the Maya Train.
The first six who fell victim to the bullet attacks were working various jobs at the time they were shot. One was a heavy machine operator. Another was shot at while clearing and burning brush. The latest two received surface wounds from a pellet gun while on the job (exact duties not known).
Authorities have not commented publicly on the incidents, however, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has been made aware of the situation and has ordered the Army and National Guard to begin a search operation for those responsible.
