Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — A palapa in the central park of the community of Tihosuco caught fire Wednesday morning, placing a delay on the town’s Revolution Day parade.
The parade had to be temporarily suspended after parade goers reported the blazing palapa to authorities. The fire happened shortly before 11:00 a.m. in the town’s central park. Firefighters arrived quickly to avoid flames spreading to other nearby palapa rooftops.
Firemen were able to put the fire out, but not before it consumed a majority of the dry grass roof. More than 80 percent of the palapa rooftop was consumed by flames. While an unofficial cause of the fire has not been determined, witnesses pointed out that there were street performers performing “tricks” with fire under the palapa.
