Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A staff bus from a local company caught fire north of Playa del Carmen Thursday. Police and firemen were notified of the fire that began while the bus was traveling the federal highway.
The bus was transporting more than a dozen hotel employees around 2:00 p.m. when black smoke began to emanate from the front. Within minutes, the smoke turned to flames which quickly spread to the rest of the unit.
Solidaridad firemen were successful in putting out the fire, but not able to save the old-model bus. A tow truck was eventually called in to remove the metal frame left after the fire.
Those riding the bus were able to get off before the smoke turned into flames. There were no injuries reported in the highway incident. The bus was pulled off to the side of the highway when it caught fire. The only effect on traffic was rubberneckers.
