Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — A boat load of Isla Mujeres ferry passengers were delayed reaching their destination Wednesday night after a mechanical failure. The ferry was crossing between the island and mainland when it experienced engine failure approximately half way across.
Hundreds of passengers found themselves stranded in the middle of the sea on the 7:00 p.m. crossing. The ferry company that runs the route was unable to get the engine running and were forced to call for a second vessel.
Company personnel assisted in the resuce effort which consisted of the evacuation of all passengers from the failed CityJet boat onto a second vessel. The passengers were transferred onto the second boat at sea, something witnessses said some passenges had problems with.
Passengers on the ferry videoed the incident, reporting the boat “having problems” continuing to cross the sea when it suddenly stopped moving. Neither Ultramar or local authorities have issued any statement on the at-sea stranding.
