Cancun UNTRAC union leader shot to death in targeted office attack

Cancun, Q.R. — The General Secretary of the Unión Nacional de Transportistas del Cambio (UNTRAC) was shot to death Friday. The Secretary, identified as César Contreras, was killed Friday afternoon while inside his office in the Cancun suburb district of Alfredo V. Bonfil.

Early reports say the targeted shooting happened around 1:30 p.m. at the office on Vicente Guerrero Street. The union leader, who was in charge of controlling motorcycle taxi drivers in the area, was shot at least three times.

Residents who heard the gunshots called 9-1-1. Cancun police and paramedics were sent to the scene of the shooting where they found the man dead.

According to initial reports, two armed people entered César Contreras’s office and shot him at point-blank range before fleeing. Paramedics confirmed the death after three gunshots to the chest.

SSC police deployed a search for those responsible while Investigative Police conducted witness interviews who confirmed César Contreras was working in his office when he was shot.

The initial lines of investigation point to a direct attack allegedly related to the collection of criminal floor fee payments. Authorities are reviewing surveillance cameras to identify and locate those responsible.
