Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — At least four people were reported injured in a single vehicle accident Friday. The driver of private vehicle and three of his passengers were hurt after crashing into a highway sign.

The accident was reported Friday shortly after 2:00 p.m. on a section of the El Tintal highway where the vehicle took out the city sign. The front end of the Yucatan-plated vehicle was destroyed in the crash after hitting the concrete base.
A large municipal road sign on Prolongación Colosio Avenue and Lilis Avenue was knocked over by driver Javier “L” who was reportedly avoiding a second vehicle. PDC Municipal Traffic police say the driver of the Mazda was traveling westbound on Colosio Avenue and crossing Lilis Avenue when he was cut off by another vehicle and swerved to avoid it.
Javier “L” left the road and crashed into the sign. Following the collision, the driver and three people from inside the car identified as Paola, 23, Vanessa, 26 and Kembly, 33, were injured. All four were transferred to hospital by ambulances. The second vehicle kept going.

The damaged Mazda was towed to the city impound. The highway was partially blocked by the afternoon accident, slowing area traffic until emergency service vehicles were cleared.
