Excessive speed likely cause in fatal Riviera Maya highway crash

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — At least one person was killed and two others left injured during a Riviera Maya highway crash. The SSC police helicopter from Playa del Carmen was used to transport the wounded to hospital.

The crash happened Monday afternoon on the federal 307 highway south of Playa del Carmen. According to available information, a compact car and taxi collided killing one driver.

The highway was shut around 3:00 p.m. to accommodate emergency vehicles responding to the accident. National Guard Highways, ambulances and personnel from the Playa del Carmen fire departement were at the scene of the crash.

National Guard Highways were traveling the area and are reported to have witnessed the two vehicle accident that left a private car in pieces. The fatal crash is being blamed on excessive speed.

According to early information, both vehicles were heading toward Tulum when the driver of the taxi attempted to pass a vehicle at the same time the private car also pulled out to pass a vehicle.

The taxi and private car ended up colliding at excessive speed, throwing both cars off the highway. The private compact car was reduced to pieces, leaving the driver dead at the scene.

PDC firemen were called to help deal with roadway fluid spills including gasoline. The deceased has not been named, however, they have been identified as being a tourist. Two people were flown to Playa del Carmen hospital in serious condition.

Traffic was at a complete halt for more than two hours in both directions due to the afternoon crash.
