Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — A group of nearby neighbors rushed to the rooftop scene of a fire Wednesday in central Isla Mujeres. The group were quickly joined by elements of the Marina who helped with buckets, hoses and fire extinguishers to put out a large fire.
Flames were seen shooting from the top of the under-construction island building along Rueda Median Avenue around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. Isla Mujeres firemen arrived on the scene, but only after it was put out.
According to early information, a fire was intentionally started by the group of building construction workers who lit a small section of a large pile of dry wood on the roof to heat food.
That small fire quickly spread and engulfed a majority of the rest of the dry timber. Shooting flames from the rooftop blaze could be seen for several blocks.
In a brief statement, Isla Mujeres Police reported that “the General Directorate of Public Security implemented an operation to put out an outbreak of fire in the center of the island.
“Thanks to the timely intervention of Public Security and Transit personnel, elements of the Mexican Navy, an ambulance from the Ninth Naval Region and elements of the Marine Infantry, no material damage or injuries were reported in the outbreak of fire that occurred in local 6 Rueda Medina Avenue.
“At 8:35 in the morning, the report of a wood fire was received at the aforementioned premises located at the confluence of Abasolo and Matamoros Streets (…) where a mound of masonry wood was burning.”
