Dozens of prison inmates transferred from Cancun and PDC to alleviate overcrowding

Cancun, Q.R. — Several dozen male and female prison inmates have been transferred out of Cancun and Playa del Carmen. On Monday, the Secretary of Public Security of Quintana Roo transferred 55 inmates to prisons in other states.

The move, they say, was to help allivate the overcrowding and improve prison conditions. This latest out-of-state transfer is the second already this year.

In January, 197 inmates were removed from the state and transferred to other prisons around the country. During this latest transfer, 27 men and 27 women were relocated from both the Cancun (Benito Juarez) and Playa del Carmen (Solidaridad) prisons.

The were moved under National Guard, State Police and Navy guard while being driven to the Cancun International Airport. The 27 men were divided into two prisons. The Federal Centers for Social Readaptation in Chiapas and another in Coahuila. The 27 women were sent to Morelos.
