Cozumel mayor says no large-scale development in sensitive areas

Cozumel, Q.R. — The mayor of Cozumel says that his administration will not allow large-scale developments that affect the natural beauty of the city, reiterating his commitment to the environment.

Municipal President Pedro Joaquín Delbouis said that the city will not allow such developments in sensitive areas, calling on locals to not to get carried away with “fake news” in where there were talks of buildings on a site near the Palancar area.

He said that the municipality has not received a request for any development in Palancar. He explained that according to the information he has, the project was rejected twice before.

“To this day, there is no request of any kind. I understand that on two occasions the project has been rejected, the addresses have not changed, nor has the legal systems of that area, so if two years ago they were rejected for that project, they will be rejected again because there are no changes in this regard,” he emphasized.

On this same property, owned by former mayor of Benito Juárez, Gregorio Sánchez Martínez, Semarnat has already rejected a hotel project and a theme park. Now a set of cabins are being analyzed, but no response has been given yet.

He added that in regard to remissions of the property, like any other citizen, the owners took advantage of a discount campaign on fines and surcharges, which does not mean that they were exempted from paying.

Joaquín Delbouis regretted that situations like this lend themselves to misinformation campaigns, so he urged citizens to verify the information circulating in social networks since there are local actors who seek to confuse and increase political divisions.
