Cozumel man arrested after defending tourists allegedly being extorted by island police

Cozumel, Q.R. — A Cozumel tourist service provider who was defending two American tourists ended up being arrested in the middle of a public street. The incident happened Tuesday in front of numerous people who watched as two police officers arrested the local man.

According to local information, the Cozumel tourist service provider, who speaks English, was defending two American tourists who were allegedly being extorted by police. The man and woman were allegedly being extorted for $50 USD when the local Cozumel man stepped in.

For his efforts, he was tossed to the ground and held there while police attempted to handcuff him. Several locals stopped to intervene since the man was only trying to help. In the end, the man was handcuffed and taken to jail for his efforts.
