Cozumel divers say ship dropped anchor, caused coral damage

Cozumel, Q.R. — Divers in the area of Cozumel say they noticed damage to the coral reef after a ship dropped anchor.

Boat service providers of the island reportedly told the harbor captain that the Hamburg of the Bahamas caused the destruction of a part of the reef area of Villa Blanca, located south of the island adjacent to the marine park, after dropping its anchor.

The large ship remained anchored for several hours since it was given authorization by the Harbor Master of Cozumel to be in the area with its engines running, however, it is alleged that an error occurred in the ship dropping anchor instead.

There has not been any official report if the ship did indeed cause damage to the coral reef.
