Cozumel, Q.R. — The island of Cozumel has been recognized as the best diving destination in Mexico and the Caribbean in the latest Diving Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA) exhibition.
“We are very happy that during the DEMA Show 2019, like last year, Cozumel was awarded as the best dive site in all of Mexico and the Caribbean. Great work has been done through platforms such as the Cozumel Scuba Fest that puts the island on the international map,” said Pablo Aguilar Torres, CPTM representative in the island.
He said joint efforts between the City Council of Cozumel, the Tourism Promotion Council, the State Tourism Secretariat and the Hotel Association have allowed these achievements and, above all, they ensure that the name of the destination continues to spread internationally.
Aguilar Torres explained that Cozumel’s main competitor is Australia, a country that has also taken various measures to protect its reefs, as well as other places in South America, but it is hoped that if they take care of these ecosystems, it will continue attracting international tourism.
Diving Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA), formerly the Diving Equipment Manufacturers Association, is an international organization dedicated to the promotion and growth of the recreational scuba diving and snorkeling industry.
The event took place in Orlando, Florida, attracting approximately 10,000 visitors.
Last year, Riviera Maya was voted as best dive destination in the world for 2019 with Cozumel leading the way. In October, the National Commissioner of Natural Protected Areas announced the partial closure of the island’s national reef system in order to give a respite to its flora and fauna.
