Cancun, Q.R. — Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta says the Benito Juárez City Council has filed a complaint with state environmental authorities for waste overflow. On Friday, Peralta announced that the City of Cancun has reported the company in charge of the landfill for environmental damage.
She says the report was filed so the state can take the necessary actions and intervene immediately in the possible environmental damage.
“I am following up promptly on the investigation and administrative consequences of this possible contamination in the sanitary landfill,” she said regarding the preliminary information she received.
Peralta says it is a priority to address the problem, to protect the people of Cancun as well as future generations from the possible spills.
She said the report she received details possible spills and leaks that arise when rainwater meets solid waste, generating environmental damage in the city’s landfill.
City of Cancun legal representative, Miguel Ángel Zenteno Cortés, filed a formal complaint with the Environmental Protection Attorney of the state of Quintana Roo and other environmental authorities regarding the situation.
