Riviera Maya, Q.R. — After a request to include the state of Quintana Roo in the CFE summer subsidy program, only Cancun and Chetumal qualified. Earlier this week, Deputy Julián Ricalde Magaña made the request after learning Quintana Roo was excluded from the seasonal subsidy program.
However, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has since made their decision, deciding that only residents in Cancun and Chetumal qualified for the summer discounts.
To qualify, the city must maintain temperatures of 30C from May to October, which classifies them as high electricity consumption users and thus, qualifies them for the seasonal subsidy program.
Residents of the cities of Cancun and Chetumal were found to be high electricity users for these months, having a need to run fans and air conditioners due to the high daytime temperatures.
Other towns who do not show a consistent 30C daytime temperature during those months simply do not qualify for the program. The CFE has published the list of the 18 cities around the country that qualified for the electrical discount this year.
• Campeche, Campeche
• Mérida, Yucatán
• Monterrey, Nuevo León
• Tepic, Nayarit
• Acapulco, Guerrero
• Iguala, Guerrero
• Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila
• Torreón, Coahuila
• Monclova, Coahuila
• Tehuantepec, Oaxaca
• Veracruz, Veracruz
• San Andrés Tuxtla, Veracruz
• Villahermosa, Tabasco
• Tampico, Tamaulipas
• Chetumal, Quintana Roo
• Cancun, Quintana Roo
• Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz
• Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas
In the state of Quintana Roo, only two cities have been included for the summer electricity discount, which runs from May 1 to October 31 each year.
Federal Quintana Roo Deputy Anahí González Hernández has referred to the state’s exclusion as “an error of interpretation” by the CFE.
