Cancun prison guard shot to death in SUV outside home

Cancun, Q.R. — An active Cancun prison guard was shot to death outside his home Wednesday morning. The shooting happened as the man was getting ready to drive away in his vehicle.

The unnamed prison guard was about to start his SUV outside his home in region 98 when he was shot at multiple times and killed by a man who got out of a nearby car.

Neighbors from Yaxcabá Street reported the 7:00 a.m. shooting to 911.

Cancun police found the man of approximately 40, already dead inside his vehicle. A threat message, allegedly of a drug nature, was reportedly left beside the body.

A police search for the shooter came up empty handed. According to the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC) of Quintana Roo, the now-deceased was an active police agent working as a Cancun prison guard.

In a briefing, the SSC reported “Regarding the violent act in which an element of this unit lost his life in SM 98 of Cancun, the Secretary of Citizen Security regrets the facts and reports that the attack against the agent does not respond to any previous threat against the State authorities.

“The Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) will carry out the corresponding investigations into the facts.

“The Secretariat remains firm in the fight against high-impact criminal acts in the State, with strong security devices in the streets and in Penitentiary Centers,” they said.

The agency did not make any mention of a hand written threat message left at the scene of the crime, but did clarify that the shooting is not in response “to any previous threat against the State authorities.”
