Teens lighting fireworks cause loss of six homes

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — Six families have lost their homes after a fire ripped through each of them from a group of teens lighting fireworks. The fires started on the roof of one home after the teens lit fireworks in the community of Melchor Ocampo in Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

One of the “bombitas” allegedly landed on the roof of a house, immediately catching fire. Wind helped fan flames, spreading them to other nearby structures that led to the complete loss of five other homes.

Residents worked feverishly to extinguish the fast-moving flames, but to no avail. Along with their homes, area residents also lost two motorcycles and three bicycles.

State Civil Protection Coordinator, Adrián Martínez Ortega, reminds residents that in many municipalities, fireworks are banned, however, in municipalities where they are allowed, they need to be used with extreme caution.

The sale of fireworks is prohibited in most municipalities of Quintana Roo including Chetumal and Isla Mujeres.
