Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — Unloading the Cuban cargo vessel of its stone has been slowed due to the extreme winds. Cuban boat Melody arrived Wednesday at Puerto Morelos where it was to eventually be unloaded of its 20,000 ton stone load, however, strong winds are not helping that happen.
Ivan Ferrat Mancera, who heads the Integral Port Administration of Quintana Roo (APIQROO) in Puerto Morelos, said that the bad weather conditions have had a major effect which could see the vessel remain loaded for the entire weekend, which is how long the winds are expected to last.
He explained that the unloading of the stone material has been put on hold because the barges being used to transfer the stone material are smaller vessels that cannot operate in high seas.
He said that once they do start unloading the stone material, it will take about 10 days to empty Melody of her load. He added that it would be 10 days of work as long as there are no other snags.
Once the smaller barges are loaded, they will move to land where the stone will be transferred onto trucks that will move it to a location in Leona Vicario along Ruta de los Cenotes where it will be turned into ballast for Maya Train use.
Once the work starts, it is expected to last until December.
