Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Authorities are investigating the death of a man arrested by Playa del Carmen police. According to the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC), the 33 year old was taken into custody Sunday afternoon from his boat.

The arrest took place on the beach and CTM in central Playa del Carmen after police received public complaints of an aggressive man. Police responded to the 4:00 p.m. report, locating him on his boat from where they proceeded to arrest him.
He was handcuffed and videoed laying in the sand before being transferred from the beach. Police reported that during his arrest, the man presented symptoms consistent with possible substance intoxication.
Instead of remaining jailed, he was taken to hospital. He was admitted at 5:45 p.m. and pronounced dead by medical staff at 10:40 p.m.
The now deceased has been identified only as a local fisherman. According to the medical staff report, his death was due to intoxication from illicit substance use.

The SSC has since confirmed that the police officers involved in his arrest have been handed over to authorities to determine responsibility and that the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) has started an investigation.
