Car hit over a dozen times in targeted Riviera Maya highway attack

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — More than a dozen shots were fired at the driver of a car traveling the federal highway Monday. Police were notified of the highway shooting that took place in the municipality of Playa del Carmen near the Puerto Morelos border.

Authorities were notified of the targeted attack around 3:00 p.m. by motorists when a white car traveling to Cancun was repeatedly shot at. Subjects in a second vehicle paired up with the car and opened fire. The driver inside was hit and forced off the road.

Police found the driver still behind the wheel and alive. He was transferred to Playa del Carmen hospital with multiple bullet wounds to his upper body, several of which were to his chest.

Authorities counted 15 bullet impacts on the driver’s side alone. The area of the highway where the car came to a stop was cordoned off while police investigated and waited for the car to be towed.
