Bacalar man arrested on drug charges extradited to U.S.

Mexico City, Mexico — A man arrested in Bacalar in April of 2020 has been extradited to the United States. The Office of the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) complied with the US extradition of Édgar Pineda Celis, alleged leader of the criminal group Guerreros Unidos.

Upon his 2020 arrest, police learned that Pineda Celis was also wanted in the US where he was under investigation for the transfer of drugs to Houston, Texas, Atlanta, Georgia and Chicago, Illinois.

The US investigation also determined that he was the link between two criminal organizations, Guerreros Unidos and the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel and was alleged responsible for transporting cocaine, heroin and methamphetamines through Mexico and to the US.

Upon his arrest in Bacalar (Quintana Roo), Pineda Celis was admitted to the South Prison in Mexico City pending the completion of the procedures for his extradition, however, he filed an injunction and was successful at winning a provisional suspension in December, a win that only delayed his extradition.

Pineda Celis was handed over to US authorities at the Mexico City International Airport where he was transferred to a Georgia court to face criminal drug-related charges.
