UK media claims of travel warnings to Cancun, Riviera Maya “completely false” says tourism council

Cancun, Q.R. — The Tourism Promotion Council of Quintana Roo says that UK claims of travel warnings due to travelers becoming ill from Cyclospora, “are completely false” and that the information published in UK media are reporting false travel warnings to destinations in Quintana Roo.

There are several UK media outlets reporting mass illnesses by UK travelers to destinations such as Cancun and Riviera Maya. The agency says that this campaign against Quintana Roo destinations “has been clearly documented” and rejects that there have been travel warnings issued by the United Kingdom government or that they recommend not traveling to Quintana Roo or any of its destinations.

El Consejo de Promoción Turística de Quintana Roo says that the reports in UK media outlets use standard language that can be found on most travel advice websites that recommend travelers consume food and drinks in established places that maintain high standards of hygiene, seek help if they feel sick, as well as other common-sense advice for travelers.

“These basic precautions or periodic updates of the web pages have been falsely reported as travel warnings,” says the agency.

The director of the Tourism Promotion Council of Quintana Roo, Darío Flota Ocampo stresses that there is no travel warning due to cases of international tourists with gastrointestinal diseases by a bacterium called Cyclospora as they have published in various UK media.

Flota Ocampo said that every summer, notes are published in relation to this issue, which he attributed to a group of lawyers who seek to obtain economic benefits through claims against tour operators and hotels, which has been documented by the newspaper “The Guardian” since June 2018.

He stressed that the government of Mexico, as well as the tourism industry, takes reports of any illnesses seriously.

The last health update by the UK government’s Public Health England regarding Mexico was August of 2016.

The United Kingdom’s Foreign Travel Advice page for Mexico, which provides updates on health and travel safety, was last updated in May. As of today, the UK website does not issue any travel warnings for Cancun or Riviera Maya.
