Two separate abductions believed related to land dispute

Chetumal, Q.R. — Two people abducted in Chetumal Saturday are believed related to an ongoing land dispute. A woman who was at a neighborhood convenience store was abducted Saturday night.

Witnesses in the residential area of Nuevo Progreso reported seeing the 67-year-old woman, identified only as P.L., forced into a waiting vehicle by a group of armed men as she arrived at the store.

The vehicle then sped off at which time witnesses called police to report the 8:00 p.m. incident.

Not long afterward, a 60-year-old man was reported abducted by a group of five armed men. The man, Helodio “R”, was with his family when he was forced into a pickup truck.

Police believe both abductions are related to an ejido land dispute in the small Mayan community of Luis Echeverría Álvarez. After a search operation in the city of Chetumal, police relocated to the community of Luis Echeverría Álvarez after receiving reports of armed men in the area.
