Authorities pay surprise inspection visit to Chetumal penitentiary

Chetumal, Q.R. — Authorities paid a surprise visit to the Chetumal penitentiary Wednesday, inspecting the entire building. Aside from the men and women’s cells, police also searched the offices, storage areas and exterior grounds.

The search was done Wednesday by the SSC (Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana) who reported locating numerous illegal items that included a variety of narcotics, cell phones and homemade tools.

“A search operation was carried out at the Othón P. Blanco Penitentiary Centre where various narcotics and prohibited objects were seized,” they reported in a statement.

“Members of the Secretariat of Citizen Security conducted a search of the prison facilities with the support of members of the Navy, National Guard, Attorney General’s Office and representatives of the Human Rights Commission.

“In order to maintain internal security, discipline, operational control, and good governance, various modules in the men’s and women’s areas, as well as all general areas of this prison, were inspected.

“The following illegal and prohibited items were found: a variety of drugs, gram scales, cell phones, pieces of rice paper, cigarette packs, charger sockets, homemade nail polish removers, scissors, metal abrasive files, US dollars, USB flash drives, razor blades, nail clippers, medical scissors, two televisions and five speakers,” they detailed.

The search, they said, was based on the prison security program agreed upon by the State Coordination for Peacebuilding and State Security in compliance with previously analyzed institutional needs in accordance with reintegration and progressive treatment.
