Crocodiles drown in Mahahual waters from illegal nets

Mahahual, Q.R. — Two crocodiles were found Thursday along a Mahahual waterway from illegally-placed fishing nets.

The nets and deceased crocodiles were found by passersby and posted to social media which caught the attention of local environmental officers.

Miguel Ángel Nadal, an environmental protection attorney, says the nets were illegal and placed by fishermen who use them to catch bait, however, they often end up trapping other species instead.

“In social networks there are many complaints, which helps us in the detection, but the problem is that nobody denounces who the person is that’s responsible for placing the illegal nets,” he said.

He said the deaths of the crocodiles and illegal net will continue to be investigated.
