Calakmul, Campeche — Mexico will have the first tropical forest reserve and the second largest in the world after the Amazon in Brazil. The tropical reserve will be in the Gran Calakmul Region of Campeche.
It will be linked to the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve and integrated into the areas destined for Conservation and Protected Natural Areas, reported the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources, María Luisa Albores González.
She said that the project will achieve biological connectivity with Laguna de Términos, which is also in the state of Campeche.
She spoke about the restoration of the ecosystem in the Nuevo Uxmal Protected Natural Area, which consists of 2,200 hectares. There, endemic flora and fauna species are preserved, including pheasants, parrots, macaws, hummingbirds, mockingbirds, cardinals, nightingales, raccoon and a wide variety of snakes.
She did not say when the tropical forest reserve will be inaugurated.
