Director of Cancun Civil Protection investigated for false accreditation

Cancun, Q.R. — The Director of Civil Protection of the city of Cancun, Antonio Fonseca León, has been temporarily separated from his position while he is investigated by the State Attorney General’s Office for the falsification of documents.

Fonseca León, who has held the title of the director of Protección Civil del Ayuntamiento de Benito Juárez, has been found accredited with a degree with an apocryphal title. The case is in the hands of the Fiscalía General del Estado.

Cancun’s mayor María Elena Lezama Espinosa said they are waiting to be informed about the results of their investigation. She says all requested documents have been handed over to the prosecutor’s office.

She reiterates that in her administration, they continue the fight against corruption noting they have received national and international recognition, including Civil Protection. She explained that they cannot discharge the official because there is an ongoing investigation and that city council will have to wait for the legal process to be completed before making a final decision.

Fonseca León was denounced in September for usurpation by profession. He is to appear before a judge Tuesday.
