Cozumel motorcycle driver dies after being shot twice

Cozumel, Q.R. — A Cozumel man who was shot while driving his motorcycle has died. The targeted shooting happened Monday night while the 26 year old male was driving in the Flores Magón neighborhood.

The shooting was reported around 10:00 p.m. at the intersection of 3 South Street and 75 bis Avenue. Other motorists who saw what happened stopped to help the young man until medical help arrived.

Emergency services and police did make it to the scene while the man was still alive. He was rushed to hospital but later died. The now-deceased has been identified as 26-year-old Antonio “R”.

Witnesses told police that he was shot at least twice by two men on a black and yellow motorcycle. Antonio “R” was pronounced at 2:00 a.m. at the hospital after being shot in the leg and abdomen.

Luis Alberto Taylor González who heads the Municipal Public Security Office of Cozumel, said that the shooting is likely a “quarrel” between criminal groups. He said the victim was being watched and was chased until he was shot.

Taylor González also said that Antonio “R” had a criminal record, but did not provide details on any of the previous charges.
