Bacalar highway congested after two heavy units collide

Bacalar, Q.R. — The drivers of two heavy units involved in a highway accident were not reported injured in the Friday mishap. Authorities were requested near a highway intersection in the municipality of Bacalar after reports of the 10:00 a.m. crash.

At the scene, police were left to deal with a heavily damaged dump truck that had collided with a semi, forcing the semi off the highway. The trailer was found deep in highway vegetation. The semi’s trailer barely cleared a set of overhead powerlines.

Traffic was affected near the southern section of Bacalar-Buenavista highway for hours while the site was cleared.

According to preliminary information, the driver of the semi hit the front driver’s side of the dump truck after invading his lane. It is not clear if the semi driver was trying to pass another vehicle or was simply distracted.

Firemen were requested at the scene when authorities noticed fuel spillage from the dump truck. National Guard Highways controlled traffic through the congested area while heavy duty tow trucks removed both units.
