Three detained after reports of extortion threats against Cancun construction site workers

Cancun, Q.R. — Three arrests were made Thursday morning after reports of armed men on a Cancun construction site. Police units responded to the report of eight armed men entering the site.

The eight men are alleged to have walked onto the construction site and threaten workers. According to testimonies from the construction workers, the armed gunmen were demanding floor rights, a form of extortion. They were also demanding that the workers sell narcotics.

Those who refused were threatened with firearms. The affected workers made an emergency report to 911. By the time police arrived, the armed men had already fled.

A search operation was implemented in the area which lead to the arrests of three. One of the three now-detained was found hiding in mangrove. The other two were arrested from the site. Five others believed involved managed to escape and were not located.
