Six Puerto Morelos beach access points scheduled for January completion

Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — Six access points to Puerto Morelos beaches will be ready early in the New Year. Axel Alejandro Rosado Ramírez, the Secretary of Public Works, says all six points will be finished by the end of January.

The Rehabilitation of Access to the Beach in the Old Town project, which Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz started four months ago, is 65 percent complete, he says.

The official indicated that the work, considered by the Mayor to be “fundamental to building the Puerto Morelos that we all want,” includes the accesses to Adolfo López Mateos, Ejército Mexicano, Vicente Guerrero, Plutarco Elías Calles, Leona Vicario and Margarita Maza de Juárez.

The project includes new posts, lights, benches, trash cans and horizontal and vertical signage, as well as ramps and indications for people with disabilities.

“The work is basically a rehabilitation project,” Rosado Ramírez said. He reported the first four beach entrances have stamped concrete floors with benches, planters and pergolas for parking bicycles.

Rosado Ramírez indicated that storm drains will also be built at the entrances to these four access points because when it rains, due to their slope, the water flows down quickly and erodes the beach. With the added storm drains, the rainwater will be absorbed through grates and will go directly to the water table.

At the entrances of Leona Vicario and Margarita Maza de Juárez, the wooden decks already there were restored. A pergola was also left to park bicycles and there will be a wooden railing and trash cans. In addition, the side planters, which have stamped concrete, a space has been left to rescue native coastal plants.

In a second stage, lighting and equipment will be added. He says that in all cases, universal accessibility will be created with properly marked ramps.

At the Adolfo López Mateos and Ejército Mexicano accesses, it was respected that it continue to serve as an exit boat ramp for the nautical service providers. Additionally, at the Mexican Army entrance, which is the access to the Blue Flag beach, the corridor where the toilets are was widened and connected to the ramp so that people with disabilities can access the bathrooms.

He said weather conditions permitting, the work will be completed no later than January 24. “We wanted to move forward faster, but it was not possible due to the rains, especially when it was time to pour concrete,” he explained.

The project is being financed with resources from the Environmental Sanitation Law and is part of the commitment to maintain and beautify public spaces. The total investment will amount to 13.7 million pesos.
