Rivera Maya, Q.R. — A man who worked as a night watchman died Wednesday morning after the palapa where he was sleeping caught fire and collapsed. The incident happened at a palapa watch tower located along the side of the federal 307 highway near Punta Venado.
At some point during the morning, the palapa caught fire while the night watchman was sleeping inside. The dry wood and grass structures are known to burn very fast.
The watchman tower was on property that was being used to store heavy equipment for highway maintenance to repair Maya Train damage. The deceased has not been publicly identified.
