Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Extortion or the charging of floor rights to restaurants is a state-wide issue, however, the head of Canirac says it occurs more commonly in Riviera Maya.
Mercy Bezaleel Pacheco, head of the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Food Industry (Canirac) said that although extortion attempts occur around the state, both Playa del Carmen (Solidaridad) and Tulum have the highest accounts.
Since it is a known problem, it is one that is being addressed by federal agencies who are making focused efforts to ensure more reports are made.
“It is already a federal issue. It’s complicated. In Cancun, it is not so big yet ,” he pointed out adding that since the installation of the C5, there has been a noticeable reduction in restaurant robberies in the past two weeks.
“We are not on our way to solving the insecurity, but we are making progress,” he said.
