PDC police intercept criminal vehicle from Cancun in Riviera Maya highway chase

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Police in the municipality of Solidaridad gave chase to a known criminal vehicle from Cancun that failed to stop at the northern filter. Numerous police units took to the Riviera Maya federal highway north of the city of Playa del Carmen Wednesday in pursuit of the runaway vehicle.

Reports of gunfire between officers and civilians from inside the vehicle were reported but not yet confirmed by local authorities. The Cancun SUV was finally stopped late Wednesday morning near a residential entrance along Playa del Carmen Boulevard north of the city.

Local media reported at least two people from inside the SUV were taken into Solidaridad police custody, while others from inside the vehicle fled on foot into nearby jungle.

However, on Wednesday afternoon, Seguridad Pública Solidaridad (SSP) did not report on arrests, only an ongoing search.

In a brief statement, the SSP of Solidaridad reported that “Solidaridad Municipal Police deployed an intense operation to locate and secure a vehicle from the city of Cancun allegedly related to criminal acts such as robbery.”

The SSP of Solidaridad said that the vehicle was reported to be involved in the theft of electronics from the city of Cancun.

“The Municipal Police are in search of the subjects allegedly involved, with the support of the Canine Unit and a drone, since they entered a jungle area.”

Earlier this month, Rubén Oyarvide Pedrero, the State Secretary for Citizen Security said that they are looking to install high tech police filters at the main accesses into Quintana Roo.
