Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The driver of a destroyed golf cart is being blamed for a power outage in a large section of the island. During the night Wednesday, nearly half of the island of Isla Mujeres was suddenly without electricity after a power pole fell.
The CFE pole was downed by a golf cart that slammed into its base, causing it to completely dislodged from an upright position and fall over. It doing so, it hit a second pole. Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) personnel were called to attend to the downed poles shortly after 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Near the poles on Rueda Medina Avenue was a grey golf cart with extensive damage to its front end. Inside, island officers found two injured girls aged 16 and 21. It is not known if they were tourists or island residents.
According to Isla Mujeres police, the accident was caused due to “out-of-control circulation” of a golf cart.
CFE personnel were able to restore most of the power within the hour by bypassing the main system, however, they were still on scene at 8:00 a.m. replacing two damaged poles in front of the maritime terminal.
One of the women from the golf cart was transferred to island hospital for treatment then on to a Cancun hospital. Her current condition is unknown.
