Nearly a dozen American tourists hurt in Riviera Maya highway accident traveling Cancun to Tulum

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Nearly a dozen tourists were injured in a highway accident south of Playa del Carmen Thursday when their van suddenly overturned. Several ambulances and Transit Officers were on scene outside Paamul in Riviera Maya where they located the overturned vehicle.

The driver of the van was transporting 15 American tourists when a failed attempt to pass another vehicle left the van on its side. At least 10 of the 15 tourists were injured after their vehicle nearly collided head on with a truck.

It is not known how many of the injured, if any, were transported to hospital. The tourists were reportedly from the state of Arizona. They were traveling to Tulum from a Cancun hotel at the time of the accident. The driver of the van was taken into police custody from the scene.
