Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The XVIII Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña International Fishing Tournament of Isla Mujeres has come to an end. After days of intense and competitive fishing, awards were handed out.
Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde said that the annual sustainable fishing tournament is a tradition in Isla Mujeres.
“The privilege dedicated to a man who did great sea fishing, an islander who lived for the livelihood of his family and to this day, the memory of Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña endures which continues to be a legacy,” she said during the closing ceremony.
The awards were handed out Sunday to winning participants. During the ceremony, Gómez Ricalde said 44 species of billfish were released back into the sea during the tournament in order to take care of the conservation of the species.
Awards presented include Marcelo Cupul’s Isla Mujeres boat, who was awarded with the largest guaju (weight not provided), Francisco Coral’s team from Cozumel won the largest sierra with 12.5 pounds under the command of Jesús Aguirre with the Ceviche 3.1 boat. The trophy for the largest tuna with 26.50 pounds.
The largest dorado award stayed in Isla Mujeres with the Santa Rosa 2 boat, commanded by Jaime Moguel. The largest bonito went to the Robbie boat weighing 18 pounds, also from Isla Mujeres.
The largest barracuda weighed 44 pounds and was reeled in by the Chiara 2 boat from Cancun.
Fishing prizes awarded were third place to Puerto Morelos with 7,730 points with the Vittorio y Carlota boat lead by Oscar Poot Avila for a prize of 120,000 pesos.
Second place was awarded to Puerto Aventuras with 8,032 points for the boat Sum Beach with captain Todd More with a prize of 225,000 pesos.
The first place award stayed in Isla Mujeres with boat Sea Hag with captain Robie Valkio with a score of 9,712. Their prize consisted of a new pickup truck worth 365,700 pesos and a cash prize of 35,000 pesos.
This year, the Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña International Fishing Tournament broke the record for participating boats with 91 fishing vessels and over 800,000 pesos in prizes.
