Intense fire from gas explosion kills trapped mother and son in Cancun apartment

Cancun, Q.R. — Two people were killed early this morning in a Cancun house fire that started inside an apartment. Emergency responders rushed to the main floor apartment in Paseos del Mar where they found the unit fully engulfed.

Neighbors could only watch as flames shot out of the windows where it was later confirmed two people were trapped. The fire happened on Obsidiana Avenue that left a mother and her 12 year old son dead.

Several others were reported injured.

According to preliminary information, the fire was caused by a gas leak inside the home where a tank was located. A leak in the line lead to an explosion inside the apartment that resulted in the fire.

Neighbors rushed to the main floor apartment after hearing screams from those inside. Municipal Police were first on scene. Due to the severity of the fire, they transported a grandmother and her two young grandchildren to Cancun hospital.

All three were found seriously injured and in immediate need of medical help.

Several others who were not as seriously injured were treated later by responding paramedics at the scene. Paramedics confirmed the deaths of the 12-year-old boy and an adult woman found inside the apartment.

Their bodies were removed from the burning building and covered with blue blankets on the sidewalk.

Cancun firefighters worked to extinguish the shooting flames engulfing the apartment, preventing the fire from spreading to neighboring homes.

Civil Protection are working with Municipal Police in an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fatal fire. Those involved in the fire, including the deceased, have not been named.
