Body of swimmer reported missing off Playa del Carmen coast found

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The body of a young teen reported missing off the coast of Playa del Carmen has been found. Authorities began an intense ground and aerial search for the missing swimmer Sunday night.

The young man went swimming Sunday evening but never came back. March 29, 2026.

He was reported missing by his family after entering the sea to swim and failing to return. According to the Municipality of Playa del Carmen, police swept the coast from Parque Fundadores north, continuing their search throughout the night and into the early morning hours.

The body of the missing teen was located early Monday morning. The 18 year old was with his family Sunday evening when he failed to return from a swim. The C5 Centre of Cancun received the initial report who dispatched emergency responders in Playa del Carmen.

The search for the young swimmer lasted nearly 12 hours before his body was finally found.

“We are informing the public about the search operation conducted on our beaches following a report of a person allegedly swept away by the current,” Playa del Carmen City Council said Monday.

“From the outset, Civil Protection, Navy and Public Safety personnel deployed a coordinated operation to locate the individual.

“Unfortunately, the person was found deceased.

“We express our deepest condolences and solidarity to their family and loved ones during this difficult time.

“We will continue working with responsibility, coordination, and professionalism to protect the lives and safety of everyone,”

In an official statement, “the Municipal Government informs the public that, through the Secretariat of Civil Protection, Risk Prevention and Firefighters, a search and rescue operation was activated Sunday night following a report of a person allegedly swept away by the current in the beach area.

“From the first alert received through the C5 (Command, Control, Communications, Computing and Intelligence Center), operational personnel immediately deployed ground patrols along the coastline, beginning in the Parque Fundadores area, and continued search efforts throughout the night and into the early morning hours.

“The operation was coordinated by the Secretariat of Civil Protection, Risk Prevention, and Firefighters, and included the participation of the Secretariat of the “Navy, the Secretariat of Citizen Security, with support from the Albatros helicopter and Tourist Police officers, strengthening the coverage and search efforts.

“This morning, the person was located. however, unfortunately, they no longer had vital signs. The State Attorney General’s Office carried out the corresponding procedures in accordance with established protocols.

“From the very beginning, support and assistance were provided to the family, prioritizing compassion, humane treatment, and timely information throughout the operation.

“We express our deepest condolences and solidarity to the family and loved ones, respectfully accompanying them in this moment of profound grief.
