Dump truck driver transporting sargassum crushed by vehicle during mechanical inspection

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A dump truck driver who stopped to check a mechanical problem was crushed by his unit. Emergency services responding to the finding of the man under is vehicle were unable to do anything.

The driver of the dump truck stopped on a road leading to the Playa del Carmen landfill to deal with a mechanical issue. While under his truck, the weight of his load caused the bed to collapse down, crushing him.

The body was found in a standing position under the dump truck Monday. March 23, 2026.

Police and Civil Protection were at the scene of the accident Monday afternoon.

The driver was transporting a load of sargassum to the city landfill when he experienced a burst pressure hose. Before reaching the landfill, he parked his truck and manually lifted the bed without supports.

While under the truck between the chassis of the unit, the bed gave way and came crashing down on him.

The deceased driver was affiliated with the Federation of Workers and Peasants (FESOC) union, identified as number 10. Reports say the bed of the dump truck was transporting more than 10 tons of sargassum at the time of the accident.

The deceased dump truck driver has been named as Francisco Hernández “T”.

Playa del Carmen Public Security Secretariat (SSC) police cordoned off the area and notified the State Attorney General’s Office who arrived to conduct the corresponding procedures.
