Brigades combat massive palapa blaze in central Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Brigades spent hours combatting a massive blaze in central Playa del Carmen Thursday. Early reports say at least five palapas were consumed by the evening fire in the city center.

Playa del Carmen firemen and Civil Protection personnel arrived at the private property on Luis Donaldo Colosio around 8:00 p.m.

According to PDC Fire Chief Yivi Méndez Jiménez, “approximately five structures were affected by the flames.”

The fire was reported by area residents who lived near the property where the fire started. Firetrucks rushed to the site Thursday evening where strong winds fueled the raging flames.

Due to the wind and extremely dry conditions, most of the property was reported engulfed in fire by the time authorities arrived.

The fire happened in an older area of central Playa del Carmen one block off Fifth Avnue North.

Municipal Police and Civil Protection were at the scene around 8:00 p.m. Thursday March 26, 2026.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, however, Chief Jiménez did confirm no injuries. Civil Protection will revisit the site Friday to begin an investigation.
