Heavy rain forecast for Yucatan Peninsula with the arrival of Arctic air mass

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Heavy rain is in the forecast for most of the Yucatan Peninsula starting tomorrow. A mass of Arctic air is forecast to reach the region Tuesday, bringing with it strong winds and rain.

The National Meteorological Service (SMN), the official source of the Government of Mexico, has issued the following advisory:

Intense “Norte” event along the Gulf Coast of Mexico, as well as heavy rains in Puebla, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Tabasco for today.

“Today, cold front number 41 and its associated Arctic air mass will move rapidly over the Gulf of Mexico and interact with a polar trough and the polar and subtropical jet streams causing a drop in temperature in much of the country (except in the northwest, west and south).

“Intense isolated rains are expected in areas of Puebla, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas and Tabasco as well as showers and heavy to very heavy rains in states of the northeast, east, center, south and southeast including the Valley of Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula,” the agency said Monday.

A strong to intense “Norte” wind event is expected with gusts of 100 to 120 km/h in Tamaulipas and Veracruz, gusts of 80 to 100 km/h overnight in the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec (Oaxaca and Chiapas), and gusts of 50 to 70 km/h in Tabasco, Campeche and Yucatán.

High waves are expected along the coasts of these states, as well as conditions favorable for snow or sleet on the peaks of Pico de Orizaba, Cofre de Perote, Popocatépetl, Iztaccíhuatl, Sierra Negra, Nevado de Toluca and La Malinche.

In contrast, the heat wave will continue in southern and southwestern Jalisco, eastern Colima, central and southwestern Michoacán, central and eastern Guerrero and southern and eastern Oaxaca, beginning today in southwestern Chiapas.

On Monday morning, State Civil Protection of Quintana Roo warned of a drop in temperatures for March 16 and 17 with the arrival of the Arctic air. Temperatures are expected to drop to between 16C (60F) and 18C (64F) at night for both days.

Heavy rains of between 50mm and 75mms are also likely for the state with strong winds of between 50 km/h and 70 km/h, also for both days.
