Cozumel Bodega Aurrera will rebuild after devastating fire ripped through 80 percent of building

Cozumel, Q.R. — The Bodega Aurrera in San Miguel, Cozumel will rebuild after a devastating fire February 22. The morning fire left over 80 percent of the island’s store in ruins.

The fire was caused by an electrical fault. February 22, 2026.

According to the company, the building was declared a total loss due to the extent of the fire. With extensive structural damage, authorities deemed the building a loss with reconstruction as an option.

However the company says they have decided to demolish the existing store and rebuild with new and better infrastructure.

A new Bodeag Aurrera store, which is part of the Walmart Mexico chain, will be constructed from the ground up during the temporary closure.

The company has already begun sectioning off the property for the start of demolition. The rebuild, they reported, should take only six months, at which time they intend to reopen their doors to the public.

The fire happened at the Bodegha Aurrera in the Maravilla neighborhood of the island February 22. According to State Civil Protection, the fire was caused by an electrical fault in the store’s kitchen area.
