Cancun, Q.R. — Police have arrested a man who was caught in the act of posing as a city inspector in a Cancun shopping plaza.
The man, identified as José Luis Espinoza Sánchez, was found inside the Mundo Maya shopping center asking tenants for money when actual city inspectors happened upon him. The incident occurred around noon when actual city inspectors arrived at the plaza and saw the impostor asking tenants for money.
The real city inspectors called police. Espinoza Sánchez was taken into custody for posing as an inspector from the Fiscalización del Municipio de Benito Juárez.
The municipal employees clarified that Espinoza Sánchez does not belong to the Fiscalización del Municipio de Benito Juárez, adding that he was without the official vest and identification badge issued by the city for officials, which was initiated last year in an attempt to avert extortion.
Reports say this was the second time he’s been arrested by the municipal police.
