Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Local environments are requesting a revocation of permits granted to Xcaret for the construction of a marina. Environmental groups have asked the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) to revoke the permits granted for the construction of the Sol de Selva project by Grupo Xcaret due to environmental damage caused to the reef areas of Sabalos and Tortugas.
The group is asking Profepa to exercise its power and verify compliance with environmental regulations given the likely damage to the Mexican Caribbean Protected Natural Areas of Sabalos and Tortugas reef areas.
They indicated that the permits contravene the Management Program of the Mexican Caribbean as well as the criteria of the Ecological Management Program of the Gulf and Caribbean Sea, for which they also requested the work be inspected for modifying the coastal morphology due to dredging and placement of concrete structures.
