East side of Cozumel marks 760 sea turtle nests

Cozumel, Q.R. — Over 760 sea turtle nests have been reported along a 20 kilometer stretch of beach on the east side of the island. Mauiricio Martin Mendoza, the Deputy Director of Ecology, says so far, the 2021 nesting season consists of 468 green turtle nests and 292 loggerhead.

He also says to date, 1,083 eggs have hatched.

Officials from the Ecology Subdirectorate do night marking, inspections and surveillance along the beaches and nesting areas due to the continually hatching eggs.

Mauricio Martín says it is important that the community respect the nesting sites and avoid removing the stakes used to mark nests.
